Description

This volume brings together reviews on three subjects of major importance to the study of obesity. It opens with a comprehensive description of the metabolic control of eating. The paper includes sections on eating and energy balance, meal-taking behaviour, effects of circulating fuels on eating, and the various controls that exist, such as control of eating by hepatic metabolism, pancreatic hormones, metabolic sensors in the brain, as well as metabolic cues and taste perception. The second paper explores the theory and practice of calculating energy expenditure and fuel selection based on indirect calorimetry and tracer methods. The final paper, on the bioenergetics of obesity, is a major review of research from 1981-1991.
