Description and Table of Contents

Description

This volume offers more than 50 poems, drawn from Hardy's work, to students studying English Literature at Advanced Level or as part of a college course. The chosen poems span from his early "Wessex Poems" across "Satires of Circumstance" and "Moments of Vision" to his later collections, "Human Shows" and "Winter Words". The selection contains some of Hardy's best love poetry and reflective lyrics, as well as his distinctive character vignettes. In style with other "Oxford Student Texts", this edition has a Notes section following on from the poems which gives detailed support on individual poems, with glosses and explanations of words and phrases and questions designed to encourage the student's own response. Another section provides a commentary and activities on key themes in Hardy's poetry and an examination of his poetic technique.
