Description

As Latin America emerges from the "lost decade" of the 1980s into the "growth decade" of the 1990s, Japan is reassessing its relationship with the region. With its large and developing markets and its rich resource base, Latin America will look increasingly attractive to Japan, assuming it continues to stabilize and restructure its economies. The moment is also right for active collaboration between Japan and the United States in Latin America, and the US has encouraged Japan's increased economic aid to the region. "Japan and Latin America in the New Global Order" explores the potential for conflict and cooperation in the emerging Japan-Latin America-US relationship, highlighting the cases of Brazil and Mexico. The outcome of a high-level study group held at the Americas Society, the book addresses critical issues and offers policy recommendations to help ensure mutually beneficial relations now and in the years to come.
