Based on interviews with senior bank officials, bank consultants, Congressional committee staff and financial journalists, this book provides a clear perspective on the current crisis facing US banks, as well as exploring the strategic and organizational problems of the banks cited. Rogers focuses on four major banks - Citicorp, Chase, Morgan and Bankers Trust - and examines what has gone right or wrong with each of them. Their examples are used to answer questions that will shape the future of banks and banking. These include should banks consolidate into a few "megabanks"?; will the system evolve into universal banks or strategically focused "niches"?; does the globalization of banking portend an on-going market erosion?; and what regulatory reforms need to be implemented to enhance the competitive position of US banks.
