内容説明

The term "elite" most often refers to privileged individuals thought to constitute a ruling group within society. The elite are viewed as a small, disproportionality powerful segment of every population, a group who establish key social patterns. Even though archaeological identification of elites is difficult, speculations about their role in society have impacted greatly on our perceptions of past Mesoamerican cultures. This volume aims to assess current archaeological knowledge of Mesoamerican elites through an open discussion of how the term has been used and why a concern with elites is important. Leading Mesoamerican archaeologists provide a broad spectrum of views. From a diverse array of databases, research designs and assumptions, two very different views have emerged regarding past Mesoamerican cultures. Some researchers argue that societies in Mesoamerica comprised only elites and peasants; others posit the existence of sizable intermediate social levels. At the root of this dichotomy are differing approaches to ethnohistoric and archaeological data. Presenting these opposed positions, "Mesoamerican Elites" points to problems in the archaeological interpretation of stratification and complexity. Of importance to students of Mesoamerican societies, the controversy and varied approaches found in this volume are intended to have implications for the analysis of ancient cultures worldwide.

内容説明

This volume assesses current archaeological knowledge of elites - priviledged, ruling-class individuals - in Mesoamerica. Leading archaeologists present a wide range of views, some arguing that societies in Mesoamerica comprised only elites and peasants, others positing the existence of sizable intermediate social levels. Presenting this broad spectrum of opinion, "Mesoamerican Elites" points to problems in the interpretation of archaeological evidence from the early Formative to the early Colonial period. This book should be an important resource for scholars and students of Mesoamerican societies and other ancient cultures worldwide.
