Description and Table of Contents

Description

Childhood rheumatic diseases differ in many ways from adult diseases and are characterized by painful inflammation of the connective tissues which bind together and support the various structures of the body. The group of diseases produces a range of symptoms and signs; early diagnosis of these signs is critical for effective management and control. This atlas presents a comprehensive photographic reference incorporating clinical pictures and recent imaging techniques, to aid the recognition and interpretation of common and rare rheumatic disorders in children. Each group of disorders is introduced by a table highlighting the main clinical, pathological, genetic and associated features of the disorder, giving the reader an overview at a glance. Unusual symptoms which may cause confusion are illustrated to further aid diagnosis. Differential diagnosis, a key element in this field where many non-rheumatic conditions mimic rheumatic diseases, is discussed in a separate chapter.
