Description
The second edition of infective endocarditis is a reference on the clinical, pathological, microbiological, therapeutic, and prognostic aspects of this disease. Leading experts detail the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and clinical manifestations of infective endocarditis, the laboratory studies and cardiac imaging modalities used in diagnosis, the microbiology of the various etiologic agents, the syndromes associated with these microorganisms, and the disease patterns seen in specific patient populations and recommend appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic and prophylactic strategies. The contributors show how modern approaches to antimicrobial activity testing, antibiotic therapy, surgical tretament and prophylaxis can improve the management of major current problems, such as nosocomial endocarditis, prosthetic valve endocarditis, endocarditis in intravenous drug users, and infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
