Description and Table of Contents

Description

This book has been developed from an introductory course of lectures given to final year undergraduates; it will therefore be suitable for any person or group beginning a study of digital control after some acquaintance with the ideas of classical control theory. The authors assume a working knowledge of basic control concepts, such as the Laplace transform, the s-plane and the frequency response. From the outset, an attempt is made to develop the z-transform on an intuitive basis, the aim being for the reader to feel that the mathematical definition "makes sense". Comprehensive techniques for controller design and implementation are also developed. The mechanism of error generation and how they relate to the choice of sampling interval are discussed at some length. Also covered is a detailed examination of both the hardware and software issues involved in the design and construction of a digital filter.

Table of Contents

  • The Z domain
  • controller design
  • error mechanisms, filter structure and the sampling interval
  • general requirements for implementation
  • specific issues of implementation. Appendices: table of laplace and z-transfers
  • block diagram representation of a transfer function
  • a mathematical description of the sampling process
  • compensation techniques
  • emulation using pole mapping
  • analysis of the phase advance compensator
  • filter simulation program
  • a brief guide to design structure diagrams.
