Description
In this pioneering study, the author traces the acquisition of symbols by two chimpanzees, from their simplest beginnings to their use as representational statements about future actions. The sometimes surprising findings reveal that the use of symbols, even at a single word level, is a multidimensional phenomenon, and that there is no sharp division between the cognitive capacities of apes and those of human beings.
