This resource book contains a narrative history of women's participation in competitive sports at the collegiate, amateur and/or professional level from the late 19th century through 1991 and a description of women's participation in the Olympics. Sixty biographies of athletes who, through their skill and dedication, were Olympic and/or world championship medal winners, or positively influenced women's sports, are included within the following 16 sports categories: auto racing; aviation; basketball; bowling; cycling; dog sledding; field hockey; figure skating; golf; gymnastics; horse racing; skiing; softball; squash; speed skating; swimming and diving; tennis; track and field; and volleyball. Each biography lists the athlete's birth date and place, parents' names (when available), information about how each woman became involved in her sport, her athletic achievements, the records she set, and the championships she earned.
The womem athletes covered include: Evelyn Ashford, Susan Butcher, Connie Carpenter-Phinney, Chris Evert, Peggy Fleming, Florence Griffith-Joyner, Steffi Graf, Dorothy Hamill, Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Mary Lou Retton, Wilma Rudolph, Grete Waitz and Babe Didrikson Zaharias, et al.
