This volume demonstrates how advances in molecular and cellular neurobiology can be directly applied to the development of new therapies for stroke, brain and spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and other neurological disorders. The contributors detail the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neuronal injury and death, examine these mechanisms in specific diseases, and explore new strategies for treatment by pharmacological intervention or by cellular and molecular replacement. Topics covered include pharmacological modulation of ion channel properties in demyelinating disorders; treatment of ischemic brain injury by calcium channel and postsynaptic receptor blockade and hypothermia; manipulation of neuronal and glial cells using antisense nucleotides; use of genetically engineered cells in CNS grafting; and intracerebral transplantation of neurons in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease.
