This paper discusses the issues of economic migrants and refugees reaching Europe from the Third World. Although their numbers are relatively small, it has resulted in controversy and a resurgence of extreme right-wing parties. In addition, tighter immigration controls, cheap international mass travel and the visible prosperity of the developed world have contributed to an increase in the number of bogus asylum seekers. This paper asks: what can be done to ease these migratory pressures without denying genuine refugees the protection they need and what measures are being taken to harmonize European immigration and refugee policies?
