内容説明
This book provides an account of the development of the 19th century English women's movement. It emphasizes the leadership roles, initially in religious and reform movements, achieved by women who against great obstacles broke free from their assigned domestic sphere. Included are vivid portraits of women preachers in early Methodism: Quaker women in the forefront of the anti-slavery movement; temperance women leading revival and reform missions; and at the century's end "platform women" effectively using the secular public platform to "educate, organize, and agitate" for women's rights.
