Description

The engineering services within all buildings can account for up to 40% of the original construction costs. Further, energy using systems can account for most of the annual costs of using the building. It is therefore essential that construction industry professionals in training and their early years of practice understand the basic principles of services engineering. The subjects of heating, air conditioning, water and gas distribution, electricity and drainage are all covered to undergraduate level. The uses of computers in the design and use of buildings is explained and actively encouraged. This book is both a higher education and an undergraduate student textbook and a practical up-dating tool for practising engineers, builders, building surveyors and others involved with buildings. It explains the working principles of the major services, supported by line diagrams, calculations and self-assessment exercises. Each chapter is introduced with a statement of the learning objectives and key terms employed. Current topics such as energy accounting, sick buildings computerized energy management systems and CFC's are discussed. The use of computer programs is encouraged by the use of simple examples and the presentation of equations which can easily be programmed in BASIC or used on spreadsheets. The methodology of the design of services systems is developed. The work has been utilized for the instruction of students over a period of many years. Because this book takes a "principles" approach to building services engineering it should be of interest in all countries regardless of the prevailing government legislation. This book should be of interest to students of HNC, BTEC Building Services, undergraduate students of architecture, building, quantity surveying and building services, and mechanical and electrical services engineers.

Description

This text is a compilation of information regrading all sections of building services. The coverage is comprehensive and engages the reader in the design calculations carried out by the building services engineer. Each chapter starts with "objectives of the chapters" and ends with questions and a glossary of technical terms used. Worked examples are used throughout the chapters. This book should be used to gain a basic understanding of building services by students from all building related courses. It is pitched at an introductory level. This book should be of interest to students of building, architecture, civil engineering and building services engineering, and mechanical and electrical services engineers.
