Description
The BIRPS Atlas presents together for the first time the 12,000 km of deep seismic reflection data collected around the British Isles by the BIRPS Group (BIRPS - British Institutions Reflection Profiling Syndicate). The boxed set of 100 seismic profiles provides a detailed image of the deep structure of the continental shelf of northwest Europe, crossing all of the major geological features around the British Isles, 2000 K of commercial profiles are also included. The BIRPS data provide some of the clearest seismic images of the deep continental crust and mantle available worldwide. Each profile is separately displayed at a scale of 1:200 000, to travel times of 15 seconds or longer so that the majority are a handy A4 height that allows easy interpretation and comparison of seismic data on the desktop. An accompanying 128 page book that provides a summary of the data acquisition and processing parameters, a brief guide to interpretation of seismic data and concisely describes the major features revealed by the seismic profiles. References to key publications are provided for further reading. The availability of BIRPS seismic data in this format will allow earth scientists - researcher and student alike - to place their own interpretation on the seismic data across this complex region of European geology. The Atlas will form a valuable teaching aid for geologists and geophysicists.
