This collection of essays honors Claude V. Palisca, one of the foremost scholars of the twentieth century. Palisca has greatly expanded our knowledge of the history of music and music theory, and his prolific writings have broughthim international renown. The twenty-two articles on musical humanism and its legacy span the whole of music history. The first section of the book, entitled Greek and Medieval Music Theory, deals with the transmission and interpretation of ancient music theory (in articles by Mathiesen, Maniates, and others). The second section, Theoretical Issues of the First and Second Practices, contains further explorations of the important change in musical style, and the factors which inspired it (Hanning, Beebe, et al). The Legacy of Musical Humanism provides the rubric for the second half of the book, gathering the articles of the third and fourth sections under the headings Music and Text (Lockwood, Plantinga, et al) and Analytical Perspectives (Berger, Forte, et al), which show the very broad influence of humanist thought during the succeeding centuries.
