The results of ten years of development in the area of optical sensing technology for application in smart materials are presented in this proceedings volume. A broad spectrum of subjects are covered: fiber sensor fundamentals; techniques for the measurement of strain, temperature, vibration and degradation; the monitoring of material fabrication and in-service lifetime properties; special consideration of high-temperature materials.
