内容説明

In a period in which anxiety over the health of the US banking system has often centred on secondary symptoms, this book directs attention back to the essence of commercial banking - the short-term loans to commercial and industrial firms. The principal focus is kept on the rate of interest applied to business loans and on how this rate presently differs in level and movement from its calmer behaviour in previous periods. Drawing on both empirical research and economic theory, the author explores the relationship between bank lending rates and other macroeconomic variables, evaluates the diverse forces that are thought to determine interest rates in this important sector, and identifies some implications for the Federal Reserve's conduct of monetary policy.
