Description

TVEI (The Technical and Vocational Education Initiative) is in many ways the most important educational innovation of the postwar period in the UK. It signalled the final collapse of the settlement instituted by the 1944 Education Act, and prepared the ground for the settlement currently being installed in its place via the 1988 Education Act. It changed the relationship between schools, local authorities and central government in ways that will be difficult to reverse. TVEI proved a catalyst to changes in what schools taught, how they taught it, and how they assessed pupil performance. This book arises out of the authors' research into and evaluation of eight different local TVEI schemes. It tells the story of TVEI as a whole, analyzes the experience of pupils and teachers, and explores how those experiences were contextualized and structured. "The TVEI Story" is interesting reading for all those concerned with educational innovation in general and TVEI in particular.
