Description and Table of Contents

Volume

v. 1 ISBN 9780199513291

Description

The collection of sculpture in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford is second only to that of the Victoria and Albert Museum. It is particularly strong in Italian bronzes and in the work of the New Sculptors (the former from the Fortnum Collection, the latter from the Brocklebank bequest). In addition it posesses the famous ivory Venus and Cupid by Petel, the bronze Venus formerly attributed to Hans Mont, the baroque marble bust of Christopher Wren signed by Pierce, a boxwood Saint Sebastian in the style of Bustelli, and the Ugolino by Pierino da Vinci - probably the finest preserved Renaissance relief in wax. The catalogue is divided into three volumes of which this is the first. It includes some ceramics, metalwork and furniture. It is fully illustrated with comparative plates and includes discussion of condition and technique. The catalogue includes material by obscure artists and little-known work by famous sculptors.

Table of Contents

  • List of works catalogued
  • notes on the scope and presentation of the catalogue
  • preliminary essay - "The Fortnum Collection"
  • sculptures of the Italian school associated with a named sculptor, craftsman or supplier
  • independent sculptures of the Italian school unassociated with a named sculptor, craftsman or supplier
  • fittings for furniture and doors unassociated with a named sculptor or craftsman (pediments, frames, knockers, handles, lockplates)
