"The Making of Modern Anglo-Jewry" examines Jewish immigration and settlement in British cities during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the formation of the contemporary Anglo-Jewish community. The essays cover areas of the Jewish experience neglected in the established historiography. These include the character of the immigrant economy, acculturation of the immigrants, the discrete experience of Jewish women and children and the significant differences between metropolitan and provincial locations. This collection of essays is pioneering in its study of the period after World War I. It presents entirely original research on the impact of the Russian Revolution on Anglo-Jewry, the transformation of communal authority in the inter-war years, Jewish involvement in politics in East London, and the impact of anti-semitism on the developments of Anglo-Jewry. It represents a major contribution to the study of the history of the Jewish community in England.
