内容説明
Scorn for the World: Bernard of Cluny's De contemptu mundioffers the complete Latin text and English translation of an extraordinary twelfth-century work. This poem of almost three thousand lines by Bernard (of Morval), a monk of Cluny, ranges widely over the conventional themes of a popular monastic genre in the Middle Ages: apocalyptic depictions of Antichrist, the Last Judgement, Heaven and Hell; the vanity of the world and the miseries of mankind. In addition, Bernard extensively satirises vices in society at large and in the Church, especially at Rome, with biting sarcasm and impressive erudition. Thus, his book, in spite of obvious exaggerations, is an excellent indexto the life and letters of a momentous era.
