This study, beginning with the rise of the Safavid dynasty in 1501 and tracing the transformation of Iran'a social structure, offers an interpretive synthesis of Iranian history. It argues that Iranian social structure is historically the product of both internal and external dynamics and that growing dependence on the West has produced a series of resistance movements that have been built on fragile social bases.
