Each year, almost 30,000 individuals take their own lives -- a great many more attempt suicide. Suicide is also the eighth leading cause of death in the United States and the most common psychiatric emergency. This edited book is the first of its kind to give special attention to essential training and guidelines for clinical practice in working with suicidal patients. The book includes chapters by the pre-eminent authorities on suicidology, focusing in particular on pragmatic guidelines, and takes a practical and clinical approach to teaching clinicians and clinicians-in-training about fundamental issues in the assessment, management, and treatment of the suicidal patient. The contributors provide topical information on all aspects of epidemiology of suicide; child and youth suicide; suicide among the elderly; the detection of high risk factors; emergency room and hospital management; psychopharmacological treatments; cognitive and psychodynamic approaches to the management of suicide; postvention; training and supervision of mental health professionals in the study of suicide; malpractice and forensic issues in suicidology; and the role of the therapeutic alliance in treating the suicidal patient.
