Description
This dictionary contains 1.7 million words of text, over 160,000 definitions, 1600 pages, and a new larger format. Also provided is an introduction with articles on the history of English, a summary of spelling rules, tables of commonly misspelt words, prefixes, suffixes and irregular verbs. A six-part appendix contains an up-to-date gazetteer with capitals, languages and currencies; world standard times; the periodic table; weights and measures. New features include a register of new words; a compendium of new word games to test the user's dictionary skills and word power; a directory of the new British Parliament with a list of MPs (plus constituency, party and majority) elected in April 1992; the new Cabinet; and the House of Lords; a political guide to the EC with notes on institutions, including representation in the European Parliament, and official statistical data from the Commission on member states; notes on each nation's political system, a chronology of the European Community; a summary of objectives and datelines for the Single Market of 1993.
