Description

This manual provides practical information in non-technical language about the use of MARC (machine readable cataloguing) coding for online cataloguing in an automated library system. It is intended primarily for library staff in small and medium-sized libraries who are implementing MARC coding in preparation for or as part of ongoing library automation. An introduction to MARC is followed by a field-by-field explanation of the various segments of the MARC bibliographic record. Authority records are described in some detail, with emphasis on the handling of major elements in a MARC-coded authority record. "Make Mine MARC" is presented in a 3-ring binder for ease of use, with dividers for each section and space for the insertation of additional procedures. Space is provided, between the existing entries in the text, for readers to write in their own examples. This volume should help all those training staff in the use of MARC, those seeking help in applying MARC tags, those applying cataloguing standards in the library and those recording a library's MARC coding examples.
