内容説明

Unlike most other new nation states, Pakistan neither had an effective broad-based political organization nor clearly recognized symbols of national unity. On these weak foundations, Pakistan has nevertheless forged a remarkable record of economic growth and industrialization along with an effective and high-profile foreign policy. The original and provocative essays in this volume examine a number of critical social, economic and political issues. The contributors deal squarely with the weak foundations of the new state and their implications for subsequent development. They study Pakistan's complex and divided society through in-depth treatment of sensitive issues relating to ethnicity, population, education and Pakistan's long search for national identity.
