Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is a technique which involves bypassing the lungs to add oxygen to the blood outside the body. It is being used increasingly to treat respiratory failure in new born children. This is a common problem in premature infants, often leading to severe brain damage and death. The technique can also be used in older children in special cases such as near drowning and in adults in, for instance, cardiac disease.
