内容説明

Case studies are an important method of stimulation and motivation for students to learn tools and techniques, as well as a broader understanding of subject issues. This book is the first of two volumes in preparation by the European Society for Materials Education. Volume 2 is planned to appear in 1993. It combines aspects of materials, manufacture and design in different measure throughout the case studies it presents. It aims to serve the student or the teacher needing contextual material, and illustrates the synergy obtained by considering the many facets of a technological issue rather than the focussed view of a specialist. Leading scientists and engineers have cooperated closely in the production of this volume of case studies, so achieving a synergy which makes these studies relevant educational material for both industry and academia. They portray the best of European creativity by engineers, scientists and managers in their chosen fields: an important topic in the near future where competitiveness of our European industry in the global market will be vital for a thriving society.

内容説明

This is the second of two volumes on this subject and continues the original aim to provide educational material for both industry and academia which combines aspects of materials science and technology with manufacturing and design issues in the format of a collection of independent studies. The various chapters reflect present-day practice, where technological issues are dealt with by team-work from various discipline backgrounds rather than by the efforts of individual specialists. Volume One has proved to be useful replacement of more traditional course material for graduate students in materials design. The layout of the book in which each chapter can be read separately as a complete study of materials and manufacturing issues from idea to product or application, provides the student with excellent practice and a sound materials science and technology background. This combination makes difficult conceptual issues easy to digest and motivates students because it shows the impact of their future work.
