Description

This volume collects together all the extant versions, printed or manuscript, of Charges to the Grand Jury. Some of these are classics; for example Henry Fielding's Charge in 1746 and Justice Ashurst's Chargein 1792.As a group of sources they are vital for any student interested in crime, the legal process, the law and the political ideology of 18th century Britain. All texts provide an interesting insight into the political fabric of the English constitution, and reveal a recurrent pattern of behaviour in times of crisis. As a whole they give a picture of political life from the Glorious Revolution till the time of Napoleon's wars. GEORGE LAMOINEis Professor of History at the University of Toulouse.
