The main theme of the 1995 report is the education of women and girls. In virtually all countries, educational opportunities for females have tended to be more limited than those for males. This situation has undoubtedly had consequences for the form and character of social cohesion in every society. Global trends in women's access to formal education in both industrial and developing countries are examined, focusing on gaps in key indicators such as enrolment, drop-out and literacy rates, as well as on girls' experience of the educational process itself and the relationship between this process and adult life changes.
