内容説明

The colonial experience has played an enormous role in shaping the perceptions of race found today. Central to the construction of racial images was British imperial education - a curiously under-researched area. "The Imperial Curriculum" presents a comparative historical analysis of racial attitudes in formal schooling both in Britain and in her dominions and colonies. Contributions examine the issue right across the British imperial experience, with case studies from Canada, Ireland, East and South Africa, through the Indian subcontinent to Australia and New Zealand. The book also considers racial indoctrination from the perspective of both colonizer and colonized. The central theme is the teaching of racial hierarchy through the curriculum and the text book in schools throughout the British sphere of influence. The book is notable for its historical as well as geographical breadth, from 19th century Ireland to present day South Africa.
