The rural Socrates (p. [237]-375) is an English translation of a French version, called Le Socrate rustique, of H.C. Hirzel's Die Wirthschaft eines philosophischen Bauers, first published in 1761. This "country philosopher" is Jacob Gouyer, called Kliyogg (1716-1785). The translation here is preceded by a special t.p.: The rural Socrates: or, A description of the oeconomical and moral conduct of a country philosopher. Written in German by M. Hirzel ... Second edition. 1764 ..
