"Pigment-protein Complexes in Plastics - Synthesis and Assembly" covers various aspects of the biosynthesis, assembly and function of plastid pigment-protein complexes. Its major focus is on chlorophyll-protein complexes which are addressed in relation to plastid development and function. This book presents these complexes from different points of view and covers their molecular biology and physiological relevance in a broad sense. The book should interest researchers working with pigment - protein complexes, which are of such fundamental importance in linking living matter with its physical feeder of energy - the sun. The first chapters are introductory and give a brief background for beginners in the field. The remaining chapters describe the formation, regulation, incorporation and function of chlorophyll- and carotenoid-containing proteins.
The text covers the regulation, synthesis, routing and integration of plastid and nuclear-encoded thylakoid proteins; discusses the composition and assembly of chlorophyll-protein complexes in the photosynthetic membranes (with structural models photosystems I and II); presents the regulation, enzyme activity and pigment association of protochlorphyllide reductase; and covers carotenoids and lipids as components of the photosynthetic membranes.
