Description
A selection of critically reviewed papers based on presentations given at the symposium "Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Metabolism and Biological Effects", which took place in September 15-19, 1992 in Oslo, Norway. This volume provides the latest information in epidemiology, basic research, clinical laboratory science and clinical experience related to omega-3 fatty acids. The striking effects of omega-3 fatty acids on several biological systems, ranging from growth regulation, modulation of inflammation, platelet activation and lipoprotein metabolism, to the function of the central nervous system, underlines the fact that they can be regarded as an essential nutrient. From a scientific point of view, it is very important to describe the biological effects of omega-3 fatty acids, and by what mechanisms they operate. This will enable scientists to initiate intelligent and proper actions for future prophylaxis and treatment for some of the most common disease in our societies. The new information about omega-3 fatty acids also raises interesting questions on how the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry may convert recent knowledge into healthy foods and effective drugs.
This task will demand extensive collaboration between the scientific community and the industry.
