Description

The design and operation of trains for the Channel Tunnel has presented engineers with an exciting and unique challenge. The Channel Tunnel is 50 kilometres long and consists of three tunnels with multiple aerodynamic interconnections. Rolling stock for the Tunnel must be able to withstand a wide variety of pressures. An international Conference on "Train Technology for the Tunnel", organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and held in Le Touquet in November 1992, brought together many experts to discuss all aspects of railway engineering for the Channel Tunnel. Topics covered were: the aerodynamic aspects of train design, safety in the Tunnel, train control and communication, and rolling stock development and design. Papers presented included: pressures on rolling stock development design, safety on the Channel Tunnel high-speed trains, the Channel Tunnel signalling system and low track force technology bogies. This volume is a collection of papers presented at this significant International Conference.
