The Global Information Infrastructure (GII) that has emerged during the 1990s is central to what is described as the Global Information Society (GIS). At the core of the emerging GIS is the Internet. Although there is plenty of discussion of the Internet from a technical point of view, current literature only pays lip-service to the wider economic and socio-political aspects. For instance, although commercial activity on the Internet is rocketing, the role of e-commerce in the GIS remains largely misunderstood. This book takes a comprehensive look at the Global Information Society from an economic and socio-political perspective. It examines the experience and situations of many different countries, providing international coverage. It focuses on the "softer" side of the Internet's impact, rather than covering technical issues. Interdisciplinary in approach, the book draws on research from strategy, HRM, marketing, operations management and international business.
