内容説明

Selected papers presented to the Fourth World Congress for Soviet and East European Studies, held in Harrogate, England, debate historical and contemporary issues. The relationship between intellectual and social developments in 19th-century Russia, and their impact on Ukrainian national identity is explored in some depth. Ukrainian migration to Siberia, and the demographic consequences of the tragedies of the 1930s and 1940s in Soviet Ukraine are examined anew. The establishment of Soviet power in Ukraine in 1917-18, Ukrainian nationalism during World War II, and Ukraine on the eve of the August 1991 proclamation of independence are also discussed. By the author of "Social Change and National Consciousness in Twentieth-Century Ukraine".
