This book is concerned with the procedure and practice of the House of Commons in the context of the contemporary political background. The aim is to show how the House conducted its business at a time when debates and votes were of real significance. The 18th century saw the evolution of many modern parliamentary forms and customs as the House of Commons came to political maturity, ranging from changes in the times of meeting to a great rise in the prestige of the office of the speaker.
