Description

Lady Grace Mildmay wrote the earliest extant complete autobiography written by a woman in English. The wife of a Northamptonshire landowner and daughter-in-law of Elizabeth I's Chancellor, she wrote about her home life, running a household and rearing children; on her spiritual life as a Protestant just after the Reformation; and about her advanced medical knowledge and care and treatment of the poor. Linda Pollock has edited Lady Grace's writings for this book to provide insights into the life of a Tudor gentlewoman, her eloquence and her interests.
