Description

This book fills a gap in the fields of radiation and solid-state physics, covering the effects - usually harmful - which occur when high-energy radiation bombards matter. The reader is introduced to radiation damage and transient radiation effects in solid materials. The discussion includes electronics, nuclear engineering, and semiconductor device physics. The approach is complementary to some of the academic texts recently published in this field. While problem-oriented, it describes in a readable form the fundamental principles which apply and contains a compendium of technical data needed to make predictions at the "device physics" level and alleviate deleterious effects at system level. Several chapters describe the management of specific problems in space vehicles, as examples of special problems encountered when automated scientific equipment is built in the industrial milieu.
