内容説明

This volume is devoted to the paintings in the National Gallery, Washington DC, that were produced from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century by British artists, or by foreign artists who spent the greater part of their working lives in Britain. Composed mainly of paintings acquired by such wealthy nineteenth century industrialists as Andrew Mellon and P. A. B. Widener, the core of this important collection is a series of portraits by such eighteenth-century artists as Gainsborough, Lawrence, Raeburn, and Romney, who represent the 'golden age' of British painting. Arranged alphabetically by artist, each work is accompanied by a full catalogue entry in which the history, style, and content is fully detailed. The volume also contains short biographies of each artist, as well as a pertinent and up-to-date bibliography.
