This book is a companion text to "Understanding Human Geography" and has a similar structure. There is a wide use of OS map extracts, air photographs and newspaper cuttings, with structured student exercises and case studies from the UK, developed and less developed countries. Taken together, the two books aim to provide complete coverage of all GCSE syllabuses that require an understanding of patterns and processes in human geography, an appreciation of the interaction between people and the environment, and an awareness of the issues which arise out of this interaction. Through the investigation of environmental issues such as river pollution and nuclear waste reprocessing, this book encourages students to understand the viewpoints of others and to clarify their own values and attitudes.
The book is in three parts and the main topics include: energy resources with case studies of the Aire valley, the Selby coalfield, pit closures in the UK, colliery waste tipping, the North Sea oil and gas industry, the Amoco Cadiz disaster, Chernobyl and acid rain in Europe; water resources with case studies of HEP in Scandinavia, the Kielder project, water supply in SE England, the Mahaweli project in Sri Lanka, pollution of the River Rhine and rehabilitation of the River Tyne; resources for recreation and leisure with case studies of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Beacon Fell Country Park, tourism in Torbay, pollution of UK beaches, tourism in Switzerland, Spain, Barbados and Kenya.
