内容説明
The Pacific Ocean covers a third of the Earth's surface. Its combined population of over 8 million inhabitants in 33 island states range from city dwellers to island peoples to mountain highlanders. By the 1990s, however, only nine of the 33 states have achieved political independence. In this new report, Erich Weingartner, explores the effects of the militarization of the Pacific on its inhabitants. Detailing the history and consequences of nuclear testing in the region, the author also outlines the impact of foreign dominance on the culture, languages and religions of the Pacific peoples. Erich Weingartner further assesses the environmental, political, and commercial prospects for the region, the future role of foreign states in the Pacific and maintains that the peoples of the Pacific have a right to freedom from military testing and from illegal foreign control.
