内容説明

Barbara Hofland (1770-1844) was an early 19th-century writer of children's books, the details of whose lives and works are almost forgetten. Yet the problems of her life - left a young widow and unhappily remarried to an impoverished artist - gave her the materials and insights into life which she used in her books. Stories such as "The Son of a Genius" and "Ellen the Teacher" were enormously popular in their day, and show a greater awareness than many other writers of Mrs Holland's time of the harsh economic facts of life as they affected many people. As well as discussing Mrs Hofland's heroic life, this study examines her books and stories, relating them to the works of contemporaries such as Maria Edgeworth and Mrs Sherwood. The use of archive material about Mrs Hofland's dealings with her publishers Longman throw light on what it meant to be a woman writer of children's books at the beginning of the 19th century, and this study concludes with a detailed checklist of Mrs Hofland's published books, including descriptions of first editions and their publishing history.
