Is the rate of criminal activity higher among ethnic minorities than among similarly placed white people? Is there discrimination against ethnic minorities in the criminal justice system? This paper brings together key findings from existing research on ethnic minorities and the British criminal justice system and provides some indication of the strengths and weaknesses of the studies on which they were based. Part I presents an overview of the findings of research to date, with particular reference to their implications for the over-representation of Afro-Caribbeans in British prisons. Part II reviews critically and in more detail the findings of research studies at each stage of the criminal justice process.
