This text investigates the Russian tradition in education, and seeks to understand schools in the context of larger historical and social processes. A central theme of the volume is the interaction between school and community, pupil and teacher, pedagogy and practice, and Russian and Soviet periods of history. The book applies social history and literary theory methodologies to the study of education in Russia. By the author of "Russian Peasant Schools", "Soviet Briefing" and editor of "The World of the Russian Peasant" and "Democratizing Russian Schools: VNIK and Radical Education Reform". His articles on Russian peasant life and schooling have appeared in "History of Education Quarterly", and the "Journal of Social History and Slavic Review".
