Description

A volume in the series, "English Episcopal Acta", this edition makes available an important source, not only for the study of 12th-century episcopal administration but also for local historians working on medieval Herefordshire, an area hitherto sparsely provided with printed primary sources. This volume is devoted to the acta of the bishops of Hereford between the consecration of Bishop Robert of Lotharingia in 1079 and the death of Bishop Hugh Foliot in 1234. An introduction provides biographies of the bishops during this period, a survey of the evolution of the episcopal household, and diplomatic and palaeographical analysis of the charters. This aims to serve as a key source for scholars of medieval ecclesiastical history as well as for those studying the history of the Southern Welsh Marches.
