This text develops an evolutionary approach to economic growth, technological change and international trade. On the basis of a detailed survey of the literature on growth and technological change, the main advantages of the evolutionary approach are outlined. Subsequently, the evolutionary ideas are applied in two separate models. These models are aimed at providing an explanation for several "stylized facts" of international growth, which are developed on the basis of a detailed empirical description of postwar growth trends. The first model describes the influence of international knowledge spillovers on growth and development, and provides an explanation for both catching-up and falling behind in economic growth, and is analyzed by means of computer simulations. Both models are tested using econometric methods. The concluding chapter provides linkages to other strands of literature in economics.
