Description
This text provides a formalization of design methods for complex systems in the process of software development, starting with the theory and then applying it to a case study. The fundamentals of software parametrization, modularization, component-oriented design, software re-use, formal specification techniques and design documentation are all covered in detail. The book uses the design language COLD-K, and the author shows how, by implementing a text editor, the abstract algorithms can be transformed into algorithms and the data types are refined through the choice of suitable representations using multiple levels of refinement. The detailed case study illustrates how the techniques used give rise to a systematic approach, a well-structured and efficient product, and accessible documentation.
